Oct. 21, 2011
DURHAM, N.C. – NC State’s volleyball team dropped three close sets against defending ACC-champion Duke Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, falling 25-20, 25-19 and 25-21.
The Wolfpack (15-9 overall, 3-8 ACC) was led by senior middle blocker Margaret Salata, who had nine kills, 11 points and a .269 hitting average. Overall, however, the Wolfpack struggled with a .089 hitting percentage, 20 attack errors and six service errors.
“We had our chances in the first and third sets,” said head coach Bryan Bunn. “They were both tied 20-20, but Duke was able to finish the game.
“We just weren’t able to find the court with our hitters.”
Sophomore middle blocker Brie Merriwether and freshman outside hitter Dariyan Hopper had seven kills each for the Wolfpack. Junior reserve Alexa Micek came off the bench to record a team-high 16 digs, while junior Megan Cyr recored 31 assists in the three sets.
The Wolfpack had trouble getting its offense going, with just 32 kills in the match. It also had trouble staying with the Blue Devils (14-6, 8-3) at the net, recording just five blocks on the night.
It was the sixth straight win for the Blue Devils.
“Duke is playing a lot better right now after an early loss at Wake Forest,” Bunn said. “They are one o the toughest teams we have faced. They have good volleyball players and they played well tonight.
Now, the Wolfpack will take most of the next week off before hosting Maryland on Friday and Boston College on Saturday. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live for free on www.GoPack.com/AllAccess.
“We’ve played a lot of volleyball the last few weeks, so this stretch coming up is much needed,” Bunn said. “We need to just work on hitting and serving and we need to rest our bodies.
“We still have a young team, so a little rest right now will be much appreciated by everyone.”
