Volleyball Suffers Setback at Pitt

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The NC State women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback against the Pitt Panthers Sunday afternoon inside Fitzgerald Field House. The Wolfpack falls to 20-10 on the season and 11-7 in ACC play, while Pitt improves to 17-14 and 9-9 in conference action.
Senior Brie Merriwether led the Pack offensively with 10 kills, followed by junior Alesha Wilson with seven. Freshman Maggie Speaks made her second career start at the setter position and dished out 28 assists, while classmate Rachel Eppley paced the squad defensively with 11 digs. Merriwether also led the team in blocks with six.
The Wolfpack opened the match with kills from Hopper and Merriwether as the squad gained a 2-0 advantage in the first set. Pitt responded with four unanswered point to take the lead, 4-2. Hopper recorded another kill to pull the team within one, but the Panthers scored three consecutive to stretch their lead to 7-3. State battled throughout the frame, but was unable to take the lead as Pitt won the set, 25-21.
In the second set, Pitt jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Wilson swatted a kill to get the Pack on the scoreboard. An attack error by Pitt tied the score at five, but the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 9-5 in the set. With NC State trailing 14-11, Pitt scored three unanswered to lead 17-11 in the frame and held on to claim the set, 25-16.
Merriwether started the third set with a kill for the Wolfpack, but the Panthers countered with four consecutive points. The Pack responded with five unanswered points as State took the lead, 6-4. NC State trailed, 21-20, before Pitt closed out the set and the match on a 4-0 run to win the third set, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.
NC State will have a quick turnaround as it travels to No. 13 Duke on Wednesday, Nov. 27 for a 2 p.m. tilt inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
