Megan's Report: Spring Season #1
Feb. 16, 2011
We are already two weeks into February and I can honestly say that this spring season is flying by! Every morning we are beginning to see little improvements in our physical fitness, work ethic and attitude. Waking up at 5:45 every morning to go work out may not be the easiest thing, but everybody on the team has the right attitude and the positive atmosphere in the weight room and on the court. This really helps everyone get their mind off the fact that the sun hasn't even risen yet. 6:30 a.m. lifts may not sound like the greatest thing, but I actually enjoy getting our workouts done with by eight o'clock which gives us the rest of the day to go to class, meet with tutors, eat, and study.
We are also training with the coaches two times a week for about an hour. The sessions are divided up into two groups and we usually go from 2:30 - 3:30 or 3:30 -4:30. These sessions have been really position specific which has allowed us all to get a lot of feedback from the coaches and work on the technical aspects of our game. During season, we don't often have the time to work one-on-one with the coaches and the practices are more 6 on 6-based drills, which prepares us for games. In spring, we have the ability to improve our individual game and really work on perfecting each skill.
Along with the two one-hour sessions per week we also have open gym for about two hours, two to three times per week. Open gym is a great time for us to get together as a team, and run our own practice for two hours. The coaches are not allowed to be there so as a team we decide what would be best to work on for those two hours. For the most part, we have been doing a lot of 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 type games. Playing these types of games brings a ton of energy into the gym and has really shown off everybody's competitive side.
Overall, the spring season has been a success as far as improving our physical fitness and volleyball skills. The whole team is really looking forward to starting team practices and competing in exhibition tournaments to see this hard work pay off. Before we know it we will be back on the court competing and being in the great physical shape that we are, will help us in our quest for an ACC championship!
