Merriwether Signs with Volleyball Program
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State head volleyball coach Bryan Bunn announced today the signing of Brie Merriwether to the Wolfpack program. A native of Orlando, Fla., Merriwether will join the program in time for the 2010 season next fall.
"Brie is a tremendous athlete and she brings a lot of qualities to our program,” said Bunn. “Her quickness, speed and ability to play above the net will have an immediate impact on our middle blocker position. She comes from a very successful high school and club program, so she is used to winning and brings that mentality to our program.”
A current senior at Oviedo High School, Merriwether served as a team captain this season and was named first-team all-conference and second-team Central Florida. She was also tabbed MVP of the Trinity Prep Invitational and was named a FACA All-Star. Her .374 hitting percentage, 342 points and 38 solo blocks were all team-highs. Additionally she posted 256 kills and 44 service aces.
Merriwether lead Oviedo to a 26-4 record in 2009, including a district tile and spot in the regional semifinals. Oveido also collected tournament championships at the Trinity Prep Invitational and Dig Pink Tournament.
As a junior she was an honorable mention all-conference selection, and was tabbed third-team Central Florida as a left side.
Academically Merriwether will graduate with academic honors and a GPA exceeding 4.0, and has been very active in various school organizations including student government, Beta Club, the principal’s advisory committee and Epsilon Nu Gamma.
Merriwether will be one of six new faces on the follow team next season, joining Jessica Groen, Anna Moore and Meredith Richardson, as well as University of Colorado transfers Megan Cyr and Becah Fogle.
