RALEIGH, N.C. - Hey everyone! I am Nicole Sweet, but everyone calls me Nikki. I am from nearby Apex, and I'm one of the 10 new incoming freshmen on the NC State volleyball team. Just this past week we began our preseason, which consists of 14 days of continuous training that will prepare us for our upcoming year.
This past Tuesday, Aug. 7, was our official move in date. We have four incoming freshman from California, one from Indiana, one from South Carolina and four from North Carolina. It was so exciting for all of us to finally get together and share the experience of setting up our apartments and our individual rooms. After we spent a few hours doing this, we headed over to the home of our head coach, Charita J. Stubbs, and met the other coaches and upper classmen there for dinner and team bonding activities. Our team clicked right off the bat. It was the first time that all 23 of us, including four coaches and our trainer, had come together as the new 2007 volleyball family.
The next day we began our preseason training, which consists of two practices a day. The past week we have been waking up around 6:30, then meeting for breakfast, and then heading over to the gym to start our practice. Our practices have been from 8:30-11:30 and 2:30-5:30, with ice baths and team meetings following both. Then we would take our showers and meet for dinner followed by another team meeting. On two of the days this past week we incorporated weights into our schedules after our first practice.
Even though we have been really busy every day and working extremely hard, there have also been some great perks to our new life. We all received new running shoes, sweats, volleyball bags, practice gear, and a great locker room to start off our season. The team also agreed that we all loved the fact that they do our laundry for us; this way we can't forget anything we need for practice because it is always in the locker room.
We have all been working very hard and we're excited to begin the 2007 season. The coaches and the eight upperclassmen have been great in helping us transition into our new life. They have been encouraging and have given us positive feedback in and out of practice on how to succeed on and off the volleyball court. Our first home tournament is Labor Day weekend so please come out to support the team.
Until next week ...
