Smith, Tamietti Named Volleyball Captains for ?08
RALEIGH, N.C. Third-year NC State head volleyball coach Charita J. Stubbs announced that Alex Smith and Arlee Tamietti have been tabbed as the program’s captains for the 2008 season on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Smith stands as a sophomore from Placentia, Calif., while Tamietti is a junior from Sahuarita, Ariz.
“I’m really excited to have both young ladies as captains,” said Stubbs. “It’s really important to have captains that are capable of leading both on and off of the court. They both have a strong work ethic and are capable of getting the job done. Alex is a quiet leader and Arlee is very vocal. They represent the direction that this program is head in.”
As a freshman last year Smith won the starting setter job and patrolled the position for the entire season. She competed in 105 games, third most on the roster, and played in 32 matches with 29 starts. One of just three players to take the court in every match on the year, she led the squad in assists with 864, dropped 16 service aces, tallied 222 digs and 53 total blocks. Smith lifted 40 assists or more six times, contributing a season-high 45 assists against East Carolina.
Tamietti, who joins the Pack after two years at Boise State, will serve as an opposite side. A season ago she competed in 48 games and 14 matches, standing second on the team in kills with 165. She also offered 15 assists, 13 service aces, 82 digs and 42 total blocks, including 10 solo.
NC State will begin its 34th season of play Aug. 29-30 at the Virginia Commonwealth Tournament in Richmond, Va. The Pack will play four matches across a two-day spread, challenging Virginia Commonwealth, Liberty, Kansas and Central Michigan.
