Volleyball Primed for Wolfpack Challenge on Saturday
Aug 23, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women’s volleyball team will give fans a preview of its 2013 squad on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum, when it hosts the annual Wolfpack Challenge intra-squad match.
“We’re looking forward to the Wolfpack Challenge on Saturday,” said head coach Bryan Bunn. “We’re going to see what the last two weeks of practice have done and put the players in some different lineups to see who’s performing the best right now.”
Players on the team will be divided into the Red and White squads to play a total of four sets, according to Bunn. Members on each team will vary by set.
State began its preparations for the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 9, with the first official day of practice.
The Wolfpack only lost two seniors from last year’s squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament and finished in a tie for fourth in the ACC. State also welcomes five freshmen and a transfer for the 2013 season.
Despite all the experience returning to the squad, Bunn says that the entire team is playing well and battling for playing time. The fourth-year head coach will use the scrimmage and the next few days of practice to determine a starting lineup for the season opener on Aug. 30 against Canisius.
“Up to this point, the competition has been pretty even,” Bunn added. “It’s a good thing to have this many people competing for a spot in the lineup.”
Junior Dariyan Hopper, who led the team in kills last season with 325, returns as well as classmate Alston Kearns, who paced the squad with 451 digs. Brie Merriwether, a senior from Orlando, Fla., is also back after leading the team in blocks with 96 during the 2012 season.
