Wolfpack Classic Begins on Friday
The NC State volleyball program will host the Wolfpack Classic this Friday, Sept. 1 - Saturday, Sept. 2, at historic Reynolds Coliseum on the NC State campus. The two-day event will give Wolfpack fans its first opportunity to see new head coach Charita J. Stubbs and the team compete in the regular season on its home turf. Northern Colorado, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Winthrop will round out the tournament field.
The tournament is composed of six matches over two days, with each team playing once on Friday and twice on Saturday. Northern Colorado and UT-Chatt. will kick off the tournament on Friday with a 4 p.m. match, as Winthrop and NC State follow at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Northern Colorado and Winthrop will do battle at 10 a.m., before UT-Chatt. and NC State face off at 12 p.m. Following a brief intermission, UT-Chatt. will take on Winthrop at 5 p.m., with Northern Colorado and NC State wrapping up play in a 7 p.m. nightcap.
The Wolfpack Classic All-Tournament team and tournament MVP will be announced within moments of the completion of the final match.
The Pack enters the weekend with a 0-3 slate after being shut out at the Spring Hill Suites Classic in Charlotte, N.C., last weekend. At the tournament, the Pack dropped contests to Davidson (3-0), East Tennessee State (3-1) and Charlotte (3-0). Sophomore Jessica Williams picked up all-tournament team accolades for her performance over the course of the event.
The Northern Colorado Bears, led by head coach Lyndsey Benson, arrive in Raleigh with a 1-2 record on the young season. Located in Greeley, Colo., the Bears feature six newcomers, in addition to three returnees from a squad that went 14-16 a year ago. Northern Colorado is a member of the Big Sky Conference.
Winthrop stands 2-1 in 2006 play, boasting five letterwinners from last season and three newcomers. Members of the Big South Conference, the Eagles are led by head coach Joel McCartney. Winthrop posted a 28-6 record in the 2005 season.
This weekend will mark the first match of the season for the UT-Chatt. Lady Mocs. The Southern Conference unit is guided by head coach Lisa Rhodes, and features 10 letterwinners and three newcomers. Last season, the Lady Mocs went 19-14.
