RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women’s volleyball team will begin the home portion of its schedule by hosting the Courtyard Midtown Classic on Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 in Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack will face the Appalachian State Mountaineers in its home opener Friday at 7 p.m.
“We’re looking forward to competing against Appalachian State on Friday,” said head coach Bryan Bunn. “They’re a good team, so it will be a good challenge for us.”
The Binghamton Bearcats and the Towson Tigers will also participate in this weekend’s tournament. The Pack will face Binghamton on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Towson in the second match of the day at 7 p.m.
State is coming off an impressive start to the season, in which the Pack swept all three matches last weekend at the Golden Griffin Invitational in Canisius, N.Y.
Senior middle blocker Meredith Richardson played great for the Wolfpack and was named the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP) after tallying 12 kills against Canisius, 11 against Cleveland State and four versus Hartford. Alston Kearns, a junior from Apex, N.C., joined Richardson on the all-tournament team. She recorded 21 digs in the first match, 18 in the second and nine in the final contest of the weekend.
“It was a good weekend to open up with, it was a nice challenge and we saw some things that we needed to work on,” Bunn added.
The Mountaineers enter Friday’s match with 4-0 record after collecting three victories during the opening weekend of play and an additional win against Presbyterian on Tuesday.
Binghamton struggled in its opening weekend of play, dropping all three matches it played. Saturday’s match will be the first meeting between the two schools. The Towson Tigers are 2-3 on the season after picking up wins against Coppin State and St. Francis. NC State owns the series record against Towson at 3-0.
Admission is free for all matches. All three of the matches with NC State playing will be broadcast live on GoPack.com.
