Pack Plays 3 Matches This Weekend
Sept. 9, 2011
RALEIGH, N.C. – When new NC State head coach Bryan Bunn took his team to Wilmington early last season, he was not pleased with the way his young squad performed while winning two of its three matches.
This weekend, Bunn hopes to see improvement as the Wolfpack (6-1) tries to maintain its early-season momentum. The Pack has won six consecutive matches, including four last weekend in a five-team tournament it hosted in Reynolds Coliseum.
“We had a good weekend last weekend and we are hoping for another one,” Bunn said. “We need to make sure we are ready to play. We have been working on several things in practice this week, like being more intense at the beginning of games and having our middle blockers get the ball more in transition.
“Those are things we will be looking for.”
Bunn’s team opens play at the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Tournament Friday at 5 p.m. against Charleston Southern. Saturday, the Pack plays East Carolina at 10:30 a.m. and host UNC Wilmington at 7:30 p.m.
Live stats will be available for all games via this link from UNC Wilmington. Live streaming video will also be available at this link for all matches involving the Seahawks. There is a $4.95 charge to watch each match.
The Wolfpack will return home next weekend to host the Courtyard Midtown Invitational at Reynolds Coliseum, playing matches against Liberty, The Citadel and Towson.
Bunn is pleased with the way his team has progressed since the beginning of practice in early August. Team confidence is high and individual players like sophomore Brie Merriwether, seniors Luciana Shafer, Margaret Salata and Kelly Wood have made steady contributions.
“We're much sharper, much cleaner than we were the first weekend,” Bunn said. “Having another full week of practice helps.
“We're hoping to play well down in Wilmington. We didn’t play well at all there last year, and we are looking to rectify that this weekend.”
