Nov. 7, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Brie Merriwether of the NC State women’s volleyball team has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District III First Team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The award recognizes student-athletes not only for their performance in the classroom, but also on the court. To qualify for the award, one must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 or better and see significant action on the court.
The Orlando, Fla., native was one of two student-athletes from the ACC selected to the District III First Team, as Duke’s Ali McCurdy also earned the honor.
For Merriwether, the accolade is the second in as many years as she was also selected to the District III First Team in 2012. As a biological sciences major, she owns a 3.975 GPA.
On the court, the senior middle blocker leads the team with 90 blocks on the season, including 11 solo blocks. Merriwether’s average of 1.24 blocks per set ranks as the fifth best in the conference and 53rd nationally. She has also contributed 161 kills, the fourth-best total on the team.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
NC State opens a five-match home stand on Thursday, Nov. 7 against the Clemson Tigers. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
