Volleyball Falls to Cavaliers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. NC State volleyball fell in three games at Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 8. The loss sends the Pack to 9-21 (3-12 ACC), while the Cavaliers jump to 14-13 (6-9 ACC).
Aiwane Iboaya posted 12 kills to lead the Wolfpack offense, while Margaret Salata provided four total blocks. Alex Smith hoisted 32 set assists, and Arlee Tamietti (13) and Kelly Wood (12) combined for 25 of the team’s 46 digs.
Beth Shelton recorded 19 scores for UVa, and Brittani Rendina put up 18 digs. Kelly Irvin and Marlow Bruneau split time at setter, amassing 18 and 16 assists respectively. Sydney Hill also had seven total blocks.
Virginia led throughout in claiming the opening tally, 25-19. The Cavaliers put up 18 kills and hit .316, compared to the Pack’s 10 kills and .105 effort. State still kept things close however, never trailing by more than six and even trimming UVa’s lead to three at 19-16 late in play.
Both teams traded blows, as well as the lead, during a seesaw game two which Virginia wound up taking 26-24. The Pack collected the opening score and led very late at 17-20, before UVa knotted things at 20-all. The score became locked again on two more occasions, 22-22 and 24-24, before consecutive points handed the set the Cavaliers. In all, the game saw 11 tied scores and seven lead changes.
Each team had its best offensive showing of the night in the third and final frame, but State’s .194 effort was eclipsed by Virginia’s .407 hitting percentage in a 25-18 loss. As was the case in the opening set, UVa never trailed after grabbing the first two scores.
NC State will now play its next four matches at home, beginning with Wake Forest this coming Wednesday, Nov. 12. Play is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
