Terps Sweep Pack, 3-0
College Park, Md. – The NC State volleyball team fell to Maryland, 3-0, on Friday, Nov. 24, in College Park, Md. The Terps out-hit the Pack .308 to .087, as the red and white committed 21 attack errors in the loss. Kelley Blakewood led the Wolfpack offense with nine kills. In defeat, NC State falls to 2-28 (0-21 ACC) on the season, while Maryland moves to 12-18 (5-16 ACC).
NC State grabbed the first two points of the opening game, but Maryland held the Pack to just 13 more scores as the Terrapins won, 30-15. Trailing the red and white 5-7, the Terps collected 20 of the next 22 points, building an insurmountable 25-9 lead. Christina Paul put the Pack out of its misery with a kill on Blakewood to halt play.
Both teams put together their best hitting percentages of the afternoon in the second frame, with NC State hitting .135 and Maryland countering with a .314 effort. With the Terps just three points shy of clinching the frame, 27-18, the Pack got hot and reeled off five-straight, moving the score to 27-23. As the Terrapins served for match point, the Wolfpack refused to wilt and collected four points on kills from Blakewood and Ashley Wallace. Despite the Pack’s comeback effort, a Beth Gillming kill ended play and gave the Terps the win, 30-28.
Maryland took a 4-3 lead in the third and final stanza, courtesy of an Andrea Bentley service error, and remained in control for the rest of play. Leading 5-4, the Terps went on a seven-point run, pushing its lead to 12-4. NC State battled back to close the gap on the Terrapin advantage, but couldn’t stop the bleeding as Maryland held on to win, 30-20.
NC State will play its last match of the season tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 25, against Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Play will begin at 1 p.m.
