Dec. 12, 2013
TOWSON, Md. – Senior Brie Merriwether of the NC State women’s volleyball team has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I Volleyball Team, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or a key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 or better on a scale of 4.0 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution.
Merriwether, a native of Orlando, Fla., claimed a spot on the third team after compiling a cumulative GPA of 3.98 as a biological sciences major. Earlier this season, she was named a first-team Academic All-District performer for the second consecutive season, thus qualifying as a candidate for Academic All-America honors.
This past season, Merriwether led the team in blocks with 123, an average of 1.18 blocks per set, which ranks among the top 10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). She finished her career with 379 career blocks, which ties as the seventh highest mark in Wolfpack history.
In addition to her stellar blocking ability, she also contributed greatly on offense, smacking the fifth-most kills on the squad in 2013 with 205. Merriwether started all 31 matches that she played in this season, after missing one contest with an injury.
NC State concluded the 2013 campaign with a 20-12 record, including an 11-9 mark in conference play. It marked the third consecutive season that the squad has reached the 20-win plateau.
