Rifle Sets Team Scoring Record in Setback to No. 3 Kentucky
Nov. 3, 2012
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Graduate student Bryan Cross finished the day with a career-best combined score, and the 15th-ranked NC State rifle team shot its way to a program record with a 4604 team score, but was outdone by the third-ranked University of Kentucky in a Great American Rifle Conference meet on Saturday at The Citadel. The Wildcats combined for a 4686 total to top the Wolfpack.
"Breaking 4600 was our primary team goal for this match, so we're pleased with our performance," said head coach Keith Miller. "We're also stressing having our counting shooters each have an individual combined score of 1150 or more. In this match Maddy, Dani, and Bryan all accomplished this, so that's a good step forward. We've had two shooters over 1150 at the same match several times, but this is the first time three scored at that level on the same day. It was Bryan's first time over 1150, and Dani's highest so far this year. Maddy's been there and above, so we're starting to see everyone's scores rise to where they need to be. That's refreshing and encouraging."
Cross, a Higganum, Conn., native, notched the second-highest score with a 577 in smallbore, and completed the successful outing with a 576 total with the air rifle. Junior Madeline Pike continued her hot streak this season, firing a team-high’s with a 578 in smallbore, and a 585 with the air rifle for an 1163 total.
Sophomore Dani Foster also had a strong showing, scoring 574 in smallbore, before posting a 578 mark with the air rifle, for an 1152 aggregate. Freshman Daniel Cliff contributed a 578 total with the air rifle, while freshman Alex Martin tallied a 558 smallbore score on the afternoon.
"Having our top three scores posted by our upperclassmen is also good to see," Miller said. "While we expect our freshmen to be a bit up and down, we really need consistently strong performances from Bryan, Dani, and Maddy. We got them on Saturday in Charleston."
NC State (13-3, 9-0 SEARC, 0-2 GARC), will travel north to Morgantown, W. Va., next weekend, Nov. 10-11, for a contest against Ole Miss on Saturday, followed by West Virginia on Sunday.
