No. 15 Wolfpack Rifle Meets No. 3 Kentucky on Saturday
Nov. 2, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State rifle team will travel to Charleston, S.C., this Saturday, Nov. 3, for a battle against third-ranked Kentucky in a Great American Rifle Conference matchup. The Wildcats were the runner-up in last year's national championship.
"We're excited to be heading to Charleston this weekend," said head coach Keith Miller. "Given that we don't have a home facility where we can host matches, The Citadel's range is essentially our 'home range.' This will be our first match there this season, and Kentucky's first time ever.
"One of our main goals for this match is to break 4600. Nonetheless we're very positive about the match since we have many things we can focus on besides how our score compares to Kentucky's."
NC State (11-2, 9-0 SEARC, 0-1 GARC) is coming off its second victory of the season at SEARC #2 last weekend, where the team fired a 4582 four the third time in its four contests this season. Junior Madeline Pike fired a personal-best 587 with the air rifle and 582 in smallbore for an 1169 aggregate. Her combined score was just two points short of her career-high 1171 she recorded Oct. 6 against Alaska-Fairbanks, where the team set a program record with a 4599 total.
"Maddy has of course been on a roll and is shooting some great scores," Miller said. "She always finds a way to be successful, so we're comfortable with where she is right now."
Freshman Alex Martin also shot a career-high 576 with the air rifle, helping the team to a 2312 score in that competition.
"We've had some good performances from our freshmen duo of Alex and Daniel [Cliff], but both have been up and down," Miller said. "We hope to see them both shoot more consistently at The Citadel."
Miller also had some comments regarding redshirt junior Amy Roderer and freshman Lee Price, who will compete this weekend.
"Amy Roderer will be back on the traveling squad for this match," Miller stated. "She's worked hard on some position changes so we're anxious to see how it translates in a match. Lee Price will be with us as well. It's his first match ever as a member our team, so we're excited for him. He'll just be shooting air rifle on Saturday, but we hope to have him ramped up on smallbore soon too."
Saturday's contest will stream live target results.
