RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s swimming & diving program will have a talented group of newcomers join the team in the fall as the recruiting class has been recognized as the sixth-best in the country, according to the CollegeSwimming.com recruiting rankings.
The 2014 incoming freshman class is one that includes high-profile student-athletes from North Carolina, as well as throughout the United States and internationally. The group consists of five student-athletes ranked among the top-115 freshman in the country, including four listed among the top 50.
Colin Ellington and Noah Franz are both local products and grew up in North Carolina. Ellington is the top-rated freshman in the state of North Carolina, while Franz competed along with Ellington and had a successful career at the high school and YMCA levels.
The squad also has several incoming freshmen from outside the state of North Carolina, as Ben Cono, Ryan Held and Hennessey Stuart will join the program. Stuart won the prestigious Hoyt Brawner Award winner for the top swimmer and scholar in the state of Colorado, while Held captured the 50 and 100 freestyle national championships this past season at the 2014 YMCA Short Course National Championships. Meanwhile, Cono was named to the 2014 Newsday All-Long Island Swim Team.
Anton Ipsen will become the third Danish-born swimmer on the roster, joining rising sophomores Andreas Schiellerup and Soren Dahl.
Krisztian Somhegyi, as well as North Carolina product Charlie Mitchell will join the diving corps in the fall, while Jacob Siar comes to NC State after two successful seasons competing for Auburn. In all, nine new faces will join the squad for the 2014-15 season.
The Wolfpack will open its season Oct. 3 and 4 at the All-North Carolina Invitational, which will be held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
