Men's Cross Country Earns At-Large Berth to NCAA Championships
Nov. 16, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. - On the strength of its third-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday, the NC State men's cross country team earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships as announced today by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee.
By virtue of the Wolfpack earning enough criteria points, based largely upon its performance at the NCAA Southeast Regional, State was granted the at-large berth by the NCAA.
"It was either perform well or go home," NC State head coach Rollie Geiger said. "I am so proud of this team. In all my years of coaching, it's always great to see the guys perform best when it's all on the line. Our older guys did great, but the young guys stepped up and ran a great race when they had to."
Out of 239 runners at the NCAA Southeast Regional, the Wolfpack placed five in the top 40, with senior Andrew Colley coming in second place, just 1.4 seconds behind first, and sophomore Graham Crawford coming in at 12th place. Behind those two, a trio of freshman Sam Roberson, Jacob Thomson and Sam Parsons finished 22nd, 26th and 39th, respectively. Colley and Crawford were both named All-Region for their respective efforts.
On the women's side, State junior Joanna Thompson qualified individually for the NCAA Championships with her top-five finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday.
Indiana State University will host the championships, Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, located in Terre Haute, Ind. The men's race will begin at noon, followed by the women's race at approximately 1:15 p.m. A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from noon to 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23, on NCAA.com.
