MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - No. 10 NC State fell into a two-run deficit early, but clawed its way back to a 5-3 victory, Friday at TicketReturn.com Field on day one of Coastal Carolina’s Baseball at the Beach.

The Wolfpack (8-1) slipped behind 3-1 through two innings on Friday, after UMBC (0-1) scored two in the first and another in the second. State rallied to tie with one run in the fifth and sixth innings, then pulled away with two in the seventh.

The win stretches the Pack’s current winning streak to eight, including six wins in the last seven days. Trea Turner’s triple in the seventh represented the go-ahead run. Turner scored twice in a 1-for-4 performance, improving to 13-for-13 on scoring when reaching base with less than two outs.

Brett Williams scored once with one RBI in a 1-for-3 effort. Williams added a stolen base to tie Turner for the team lead with five, and maintained his torrid pace at the plate; In his last 26 plate appearances, Williams has reached base 19 times.

Jake Armstrong continued to display outstanding patience in the batter’s box. The sophomore transfer drew three walks on the game. Armstrong has two or more walks in each of the last five games, and 12 on the season to lead the Pack by five.

Reliever D.J. Thomas (1-0) picked up the win on two innings of work, holding the Retrievers scoreless with one hit. Freshman Jon Olczak submitted the game’s best performance, allowing one unearned run on one hit over 4 2/3 innings. Olczak retired the last 11 batters he faced. Chris Overman (1) earned his first save of the year with two no-hit innings to finish.

UMBC loaded the bases in the top of the first, and managed to push two across. A walk brought in the first run, and an RBI single dropped into center for the second. Olczak entered there and induced a double play ball to end the threat. The Pack returned the favor in the bottom half, as Turner reached on a throwing error and scored two outs later on Tarran Senay’s RBI single to right.

The Retrievers made it 3-1 in the second, and State had to wait until the fifth to begin its comeback. Armstrong walked to lead off the inning. Bryan Adametz doubled behind him to put two in scoring position. A controversial play killed the rally when the umpires convened and overturned a play at the plate involving Adametz on a sac fly.

The play turned out to be a moot point once the Pack took command in the seventh. Turner led off the inning by splitting the fielders in right center for a triple. Williams knocked an RBI single to left to score him, then stole second. With two outs, Williams scored from third on a wild pitch.
