DeLAND, FLA. – No. 5 NC State baseball won its sixth-straight contest, dropping Stetson 6-1 on Tuesday night at Melching Field.

The Pack (14-2) improved to 14-0 on the year when scoring at least one run, a run State was able to produce in the top of the first. The Wolfpack added three more in the third, traded runs with Stetson (5-12) in the fourth and fifth, and added one for insurance in the eighth to set the final margin at 6-1.

State’s streak of holding opponents scoreless came to an end at 24 innings, short of a run of 27 scoreless innings compiled by 2013’s pitching staff. The Pack has now held opponents scoreless in 29 of 30 innings dating back to game one of its series with Notre Dame on March 8.

Brett Austin led off and played second base, leading the Pack with a 2-for-4 performance including a run scored. Jake Fincher drove in a pair of RBIs during State’s third inning, his only hit in a 1-for-3 game with a run scored, two RBIs, a stolen base, and a walk.

Jake Armstrong contributed two RBIs as well in a 1-for-4 effort with a double. Bubby Riley drew three walks in a 1-for-1 game. John Mangum drew the start at catcher and went 1-for-2 with a double, two runs, and two walks. Trea Turner drove in the Pack’s first run in a 1-for-4 outing with a walk.

Andrew Woeck (3-0) claimed the win in 3 2/3 innings of relief, striking out six of 12 batters faced, holding the Hatters hitless with a walk. Patrick Peterson started and worked four innings, allowing one earned on four hits and three walks with six punchouts. Will Gilbert and Joe O’Donnell combined to pitch the final 1 1/3, limiting Stetson to one hit between them.

Austin led off the game with a line drive single smashed to right. Fincher moved him to second with a chopper back to the mound. Turner drove in the first run on an RBI single knocked through the right side.

Mangum and Garrett Suggs led off the third with back-to-back walks on full counts. Austin bunted both into scoring position, setting up Fincher’s two-RBI single to right. Fincher stole second before walks to Turner and Riley loaded the bases with one away. Armstrong’s sac fly to right made it 4-0.

NC State returns to action on Friday, March 14 to begin a three-game series at second-ranked Florida State. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN3.
