RALEIGH, N.C. - Five Wolfpack pitchers combined to strike out 16 as No. 17 NC State blanked Quinnipiac 1-0, Tuesday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

State (13-4) had plenty of opportunities, but could only cash in once, on Brett Austin’s RBI double in the sixth. NC State has not been retired in order in any of its last 18 innings, but the Wolfpack left 15 runners stranded in the contest. Austin’s RBI broke the tie, and proved to be enough as the Pack pitching staff shut out the Bobcats (4-3) the rest of the way.

Andrew Woeck (2-0) scored the win by staying perfect for 2 1/3 innings in relief, but he wasn’t the only unhittable Wolfpack pitcher on Tuesday night. Woeck and starter Logan Jernigan fanned five batters each, while Chris Overman struck out the side in the ninth for his second save of the year. Jon Olczak and Grant Sasser combined to strike out the other three.

Austin finished the day 3-for-5 with an RBI and two doubles. Jake Fincher provided the Pack’s only other multi-hit game by going 2-for-4. Fincher extends his reached base streak to 17 games.

Quinnipiac reliever Kevin O’Connell (0-1) took the loss on one earned over the final three innings. Starter Justin Thomas scattered seven hits through five while holding State scoreless.

State nearly fell behind in the top of the sixth when Quinnipiac managed to load the bases on a single, an error, and a failed fielder’s choice. Sam Morgan went home on a grounder to third to record the first out, then Woeck rallied with a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

The Pack finally broke through in the bottom sixth. Morgan reached on a hit batsman, and Matt Bergquist bunted him to second. Logan Ratledge walked behind him, setting up Austin for the game-winning RBI double to left center.
