CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 16 NC State lost a 6-3 contest in its series finale at No. 11 Virginia on Sunday at Davenport Field. Sunday’s result marks the first time The Wolfpack has been swept in a three-game series since April 2011.

State (16-9, 3-6 ACC) scored in the top of the first for the second time in the series, then added to that lead with a run in the fourth to make it 2-0.

Virginia (22-2, 7-2) took the lead with a three-run fourth, and added another three in the sixth to take control. The Pack scored once in the ninth to set the final at 6-3.

Brett Austin had the Wolfpack’s only multi-hit outing, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Logan Ratledge tripled and scored a run. Matt Bergquist scored in the ninth after a pinch-hit double to the rightfield corner. Sam Morgan had an RBI in a 1-for-2 day.

The Wolfpack used seven pitchers in the game. Brad Stone started and went 3 2/3 with four strikeouts. Josh Easley (1-1) took the loss as the first reliever out of the bullpen. Grant Sasser retired four of five batters while holding the Cavaliers hitless in a 1 1/3. Andrew Woeck shut out Virginia for 2 1/3 late in the game.

Virginia starter Nick Howard lasted 4 1/3, allowing two earned on six hits for a no decision. Reliever Austin Young (2-0) scored the win in 2/3 of an inning in the fourth. Josh Sborz pitched for the second time this weekend, holding the Pack to two hits over the next three innings.

Austin led off the game with a single to center, Bryan Adametz walked, and Tarran Senay laid down a perfect bunt that stopped on the third base line to load the bases with nobody out. Brett Williams drove in a run on a fielder’s choice that left runners on the corners. A foul out and fly to right ended the inning before State could do any more damage.

The Pack struck again in the fourth thanks to Ratledge’s one-out triple down the left field line. Morgan knocked a two-out RBI single to center to extend the Wolfpack lead to 2-0.

Virginia stole the lead with three runs in the fourth. Back-to-back walks started the inning, but a called strike three and a fly ball left runners on the corners with two away. Nick Howard started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle. Reed Gragnani followed with another RBI single to center. Two more walks pushed the third run across.

The Cavs loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth on a pair of singles up the middle, followed by a walk. Branden Cogswell’s infield single to second scored the first run, and a sac fly by Kenny Towns brought in the next. Joe McCarthy sent a sac fly to left to stretch the Virginia lead to 6-2.

State attempted to rally in the ninth. Bergquist led off the inning with a pinch-hit double into the right field corner. Austin brought him in with a one-out single to left, and a fielding error allowed him to take second on the play. A grounder to short and a strikeout left him stranded.

NC State returns to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, with a visit to UNC Wilmington. Radio coverage will be provided by 88.1 WKNC or depending on the women’s basketball schedule. Fans can also follow along with live stats on, or on Twitter via @NCStateBaseball.
