    Pack Falls 8-5 in Series Finale

    BLACKSBURG, Va. - NC State baseball fell 8-5 to Virginia Tech in its regular season finale at English Field on Saturday.

    The Wolfpack (32-22, 13-17 ACC) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first and cut that lead in half in the fourth. The Hokies (21-31-1, 9-21) pushed four runs across in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead, then tacked one more on in the fifth. State scored once in the sixth to make it 7-2. Tech extended that lead to 8-2 in the eighth. The Pack scored three times in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate before falling 8-5.

    Chance Shepard led the way with a 2-for-4 outing including two runs and an RBI. Jake Fincher, Kyle Cavanaugh, and Brett Austin turned in two-hit ballgames of their own. Bubby Riley hit a solo shot to open the ninth, his first homer of the year. Cavanaugh reached three times in a 2-for-2 effort with an RBI and a walk.

    Patrick Peterson (1-2) took the loss on 3 1/3 innings. The Pack utilized seven more arms out of the bullpen. Will Gilbert worked the longest, going 1 2/3 innings with three punchouts and one hit allowed. Cory Wilder, Joe O’Donnell, Jon Olczak, Brad Stone, Chris Williams, and D.J. Thomas also saw action, with none going longer than an inning.

    NC State returns to action on Tuesday in Greensboro for the play-in round of the ACC Tournament. Radio coverage for the tournament will be carried by 88.1 WKNC.
