Led by a 2-for-4, two RBI effort from Tarran Senay, the White team prevailed 5-0 over the Red in the first of three games in the Fall Preview, Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
"It was fun for the guys to put on the Wolfpack uniform again, and play under the lights at the Doak," said NC State head coach Elliott Avent. "The excitement was there, but tonight showed we have much to improve on before the season gets underway. Tomorrow night we'll look to play with more intensity throughout the entire game, and play a little smarter. We have good and determined players that will make the necessary adjustments."
Logan Ratledge went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs. Trea Turner stole a base and scored once in an 0-for-3 effort. Grant Clyde drove in one during his 1-for-4 showing. Jake Fincher stole two bases and scored once while going 0-for-2.
For the Red, sophomore transfer Sam Morgan led off and delivered a 1-for-3 performance. Matt Bergquist and Brett Austin each singled in the eighth inning.
Josh Easley started and secured the win by pitching two no-hit innings with a strikeout. D.J. Thomas, Anthony Tzamtzis, and Ryan Wilkins combined to hold the Red squad scoreless with three hits over the final six frames.
The Red team’s Grant Sasser submitted the best pitching performance of the night, striking out four batters over two innings, fanning the side in the fourth. Junior transfer Andrew Woeck came in with the bases loaded in the sixth and worked his way out of the jam, going 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit and striking out a pair.
The White team leapt out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, thanks in part to Senay’s first RBI of the contest. Trea Turner laid down a bunt and reached on a fielding error, then stole second. Logan Ratledge reached after being hit by a pitch to put two on with nobody out.
Senay bounced a single to the right side, scoring Turner. Ratledge scored from third on the next play when Grant Clyde singled to right, and Senay came home on Jake Fincher’s sac fly.
White tacked on another run in the bottom fifth. Ratledge sent a ground rule double into the left field corner with two away. Senay followed him with a single to right to make it 4-0. Fincher scored the fifth and final run in the sixth by drawing a walk, stealing second and third, and scoring when an errant pick-off attempt by the catcher sailed into center field.
The second game of the Fall Preview takes place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. Sunday’s finale also starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free, and live Twitter updates are available by following @NCStateBaseball.
