The Last Meeting
March 16, 2013
NC State will be aiming for its fourth road victory of the season when it visits Miami Saturday, Feb, 8 at 2 p.m. The game is the 15th meeting between the two schools all-time, with NC State holding an 8-6 edge. The Hurricanes, one of four teams NC State plays twice, will return the game at PNC Arena Saturday, March 1 at noon.
NC State (14-8, 4-5) can reach .500 in ACC play for the third time this season with a victory. The Wolfpack had its three-game win streak snapped a week ago in Chapel Hill. NCSU will try to build off the momentum of a 47-point second half at UNC that saw the team shoot better than 65 percent.
Miami (11-11, 2-7) is coming off an overtime loss at home to Pittsburgh. The Hurricanes, last year's ACC champion, are led by Rion Brown's 14.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
After playing at Miami, the Pack will host Wake Forest Tuesday, Feb. 11 on ESPNU at 7 p.m.
The Starting 5 - The Top 5 Storylines For This Game
1. PACK AND CANES HAD SIMILAR CHALLENGES
Before this season started, NC State and Miami were facing simiilar obstacles. Both teams were working toward replacing several accomplished players who either graduated or left for the NBA Draft. The Wolfpack had to replace a group of players (Richard Howell, Scott Wood, Lorenzo Brown, C.J. Leslie) that produced 5,499 points, 2,655 rebounds, 1,084 assists and 420 starts. Miami replaced a group of six players (including Shane Larkin, Durand Scott and Kenny Kadji) that produced 5,399 career points, 2,744 rebounds, 966 assists and 412 starts.
2. THE LAST 2 VISITS TO CORAL GABLES WENT WELL
NC State has won its last two trips to Miami's BankUnited Center. In 2012, Mark Gottfried's first Wolfpack squad used 21 points from Scott Wood to win 78-73 in Miami. In 2010, Javier Gonzalez and Tracy Smith each scored 19 points to lift NC State to a 71-66 win over the Hurricanes. NC State is 3-3 all-time at the BankUnited Center.
T.J. Warren, the ACC's leading scorer at 22.4 points per game, posted his ACC-high fourth 30-point game of the season when he scored 30 against Florida State on Jan. 29. The 6-8 sophomore is the only player in the ACC with multiple 30-point performances, and he also leads the conference with 17 games with 20 points or more. Warren dropped 30 points on Florida Gulf Coast (30), Eastern Kentucky (30) and ECU (32) in addition to FSU. Warren, who is the top scorer among all players in the Power 5 conferences, ranks second in the ACC with a .515 field goal percentage (minimum 5 FG made per game). Warren has reached double figures in 23 of his last 25 games and is also among the ACC's leaders in rebounds (7th), offensive rebounds (1st), minutes played (7th) and steals (5th).
4. TALKING ABOUT THE ROAD
NC State will be aiming for its fourth road victory of the season when it takes on Miami. The Wolfpack went on the road and defeated Tennessee and UNCG in the nonconference portion of the schedule before winning its ACC road opener at Notre Dame, just days after the Irish had defeated Duke. Only four teams in the ACC currently claim four road wins (Syracuse, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Miami).
5. ON THE `MARK' in ACC PLAY
NC State has won 24 ACC games since Mark Gottfried came to NC State. His 20 wins during his first two years was the most for NCSU over a two-year span since the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons. NC State also won 20 ACC games during those two seasons. Additionally, Gottfried became just the third coach in ACC history to lead his first two teams to the NCAA Tournament (Bill Guthridge, Roy Williams).
