RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite rain at the beginning, the NC State football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday morning on the Pack’s practice field. Here are the post scrimmage quotes from head coach Dave Doeren.
On Today’s Scrimmage: “Both sides did some things. There were some big plays offensively — a 99-yard touchdown, which obviously on defense you hate to see but it’s great to see the offense have a big play like that. We ran the ball as good as I’ve seen us run it since I’ve been here today. Dakwa Nichols made some strides and Tony Creecy had a very solid day.
“In pass defense we played pretty well. There were a couple of pass breakups and some close interceptions that would have been great catches if they’d come up with them. Our pass rush is good – that’s where our depth is so I kind of expected that.
“A goal line stand at the end was a pretty big deal for the defense.
“That’s what you want – back and forth between the offense and defense. In one period the offense was doing well and the defense rallied back. Then the offense came back and then the defense. You’re starting to see leadership that can handle adversity a little better than a year ago.
On Senior LB Rodman Noel: “He’s a totally different guy. In the 19 months I’ve been here he’s probably one of the most improved players on our team. Not just out there but how he did in the offseason, how he handles his academics, just his entire lifestyle. He’s bought in to being a great player and it’s showing on the field.
“[Senior LB Brandon] Pittman probably had his best day too. You need your seniors to play like seniors if you’re going to have a good team.
On running the football: “Short yardage was outstanding and you’re seeing much bigger holes for the backs. I need to watch the pass rush end of things I need to watch [the film] to see where we’re at."
On Senior OT Rob Crisp: “He’s really good in pass protection right now. Really athletic. That’s come back real fast. I still think at times the different looks the defense can give you in the run game is what he’s got to work on. It’s good to have him back out here and I know he’s having fun."
On Individual Freshmen Who Have Stood Out: “Quite a few. I’m not going to talk about the guys who were here in the spring because you know about them. Michael Stevens, Troy Vincent, Jr., Elliott Davis have all three made some plays. At tight end/fullback Jaylen Samuels is really playing well. Jalen McClendon had a good day today at quarterback. He’s probably got the best arm of the quarterbacks we have. Today he was faster and more confident."
