Men's Tennis Falls to VCU, 4-3

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 34th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team dropped a tightly contested 4-3 decision against No. 30 VCU on Saturday, as play got underway in the sixth annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
The Pack opened by capturing the doubles point for the third consecutive match to open the dual season. The tandem of Sean Weber and Nick Horton earned the first victory of the day for State on court one. The 19th-ranked duo used an early break on its way to a 6-2 victory over VCU’s team of Michal Voscek and Vuc Velickovic. Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster picked up their third straight victory as a tandem, defeating Alexis Huegas and Wilder Pimentel, 6-4, to seal the doubles point for State.
In singles action, VCU claimed the first two matches of the day, as 78th-ranked Huegas defeated Thomas Weigel at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 6-3. Bond dropped a hard fought match on court six against Velickovic, 6-5 (3), 6-4.
A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Powell tied the team score at 2-2 with a thrilling 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Voscek of the Rams. The win is his team-best 15th of the season.
The teams then split the next two matches with VCU claiming the match on court three and State answering with a win at the No. 5 position. Mudge was edged in three sets by Argente at the No. 3 position, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Weber outlasted Pimentel on court five, 6-3, 5-6 (3), 6-4.
In the deciding match of the afternoon on court four, Horton dropped a closely contested match to Mateo, 6-4, 2-6, 6-5 (1).
The Wolfpack will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 26 in a consolation match against Michigan State. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
