No. 19 Wolfpack Falls to No. 10 Duke in ACC Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 19 NC State men’s tennis team dropped its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match of the season against No. 10 Duke, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium. State falls to 11-3 on the season and 0-1 in ACC play, while Duke improves to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The match opened with the Blue Devils winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. At the No. 2 spot in the order, the tandem of Sean Weber and Simon Norenius dropped their match against Duke’s Fred Saba and Raphael Hemmeler, 8-4. Duke sealed the opening point with an 8-5 victory at the No. 3 position, as Cale Hammond and Bruno Semenzato defeated Austin Powell and Beck Bond.
In singles, Duke’s Tahir defeated Mudge, 6-2, 6-2, on court two, while Norenius dropped his match against Hemmeler, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot in the order. Meanwhile, Weber fell to Semenzato on court five, 6-2, 6-2, as the win from Semenzato sealed the team win for the Blue Devils.
Thomas Weigel dropped his match at the No. 3 position against Saba, 7-5, 6-1, while Powell fell against 37th-ranked Redlicki, 6-3, 7-5. Nick Horton captured the first set in his match on court six against Josh Levine, 6-4, but dropped the next set and was edged in a third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9).
Up next, the Wolfpack will host No. 11 North Carolina on Friday, March 14 at the Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. first serve.
