    State Upsets No. 25 Wake Forest, 4-3, to Conclude Regular Season

    WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Simon Norenius, Nick Horton and Austin Powell of the No. 32 NC State men’s tennis team each won their respective singles match to lead the Wolfpack to a 4-3 victory Saturday evening over Wake Forest. With the win, State concludes the regular season with a 16-8 overall record and a 5-6 mark in conference action

    After being delayed by rain for an hour to start the match, State won the crucial doubles point for the 18th time this season.

    The tandem of Sean Weber and Horton won the first match of the day from the No. 2 spot in the lineup, defeating Romain Bogaerts and Maksim Kan, 8-2. Meanwhile, Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge, ranked 25th in the latest ITA doubles rankings, sealed the opening point for the Pack with an 8-7 victory at the top of the lineup against Jon Ho and Pedro Dumont. With the win, Dempster and Mudge moved into a tie for second all-time in victories by a tandem in the dual season with 18.

    At the No. 3 position, Powell and Norenius completed the sweep with an 8-7 victory against Anthony Delcore and Adam Lee.

    In singles action, the Demon Deacons claimed the first match to even the team score at 1-1, as Dempster dropped his first match of the season at the No. 5 position against Dumont, 6-0, 6-2. At the No. 6 spot in the order, Weber was defeated by Aws Laaribi, 7-5, 7-5.

    Meanwhile, the Wolfpack would respond by claiming each of the next three matches in a decisive third set to seal the team win.



    Norenius, playing at the No. 3 position, dropped the first set, before winning each of the next two to earn his 20th victory of the season over Lee, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Horton also captured a victory in a third set over Kan, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

    At the No. 2 position, Powell picked up his team leading 23rd victory of the campaign with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 decision against Ho of Wake Forest. The win from Powell clinched the team victory for the Pack.

    At the top position of the lineup, Mudge dropped his match in a decisive third set against No. 35 Bogaerts, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5.

    The 2014 ACC men’s tennis tournament is set to begin April 24-27 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
