    CARY, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis team dropped a tough 4-2 decision against the 26th-ranked Clemson Tigers in the quarterfinals of the 2013 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park. 

    The Tigers (18-6) came out strong in doubles play and won two matches to claim the doubles point. Clemson’s 11th-ranked duo of Dominique and Yannick Maden defeated the Pack’s 15th-ranked tandem of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber, 8-5. The Tigers’ clinched the point when Zachary Rigsby and Ayrton Wibowo outlasted Robbie Mudge and Thomas Weigel, 8-6. 

    NC State (13-10) sophomores Beck Bond and Austin Powell were leading Hunter Harrington and Gerardo Meza, 7-6, when the doubles point was clinched and the match went unfinished. 

    In singles play, Clemson struck first with a win at the No. 4 spot in the lineup as Wibowo defeated Weigel in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (6).  The Tigers added to their lead when 23rd-ranked Yannick Maden closed out Powell at the top spot in the lineup, 7-6 (1), 6-1, to push their advantage to 3-0 in the overall match.

    The Wolfpack would not go down without a fight however, and rebounded with wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles to trim the deficit to 3-2. Weber topped Austin Ansari in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, on court six, while Thomson added to the Pack’s total with his win on court three against Meza by the same margin (6-4, 6-4).

    At the No. 5 spot in the lineup, Bond and Rigsby split the first two sets with Bond winning the first set, 6-3, and Rigsby countering with a 6-1 second-set win. The two opponents battled throughout the final frame, but Rigsby emerged victorious in the third set, 7-5, to win his match and clinch the match for the Tigers.



    Mudge and Harrington were in the third set of their match at the No. 2 spot when Clemson clinched the win, but the match went unfinished.

    NC State will now wait to see where it will be competing in the 2013 NCAA Championship, and the field of 64 teams will be announced during the April 30 NCAA Selection Show at 5 p.m. The show can be seen live on
