Weigel Stellar in Collegiate Debut

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Thomas Weigel made his collegiate debut on Friday at the UVA Ranked +1 Invitational, and did so in grand style, defeating Christopher Lang of Middle Tennessee State 7-5, 7-6 (5).
NC State also received singles' victories from Austin Powell and Sean Weber. Powell dominated his match against Ian Uriguen of Virginia, winning the first set 6-2, before shutting out his opponent in the second set, 6-0. Weber collected another huge win for the Pack knocking off Nick Sayer of Radford, who is ranked No. 74 in the ITA preseason rankings. The Wolfpack junior fell in the opening set 6-1, but roared back in the second and third sets winning 6-3 and 7-6 (4), respectively.
Rafael Paez, who made his season debut, dropped his match to Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia, ranked No. 2 in the ITA preseason rankings. Jenkins jumped out to an early lead in the match, winning the first set, 6-1, but Paez fought back and took the second set 6-3 before Jenkins prevailed in the third set, 6-3.
It was a tough day for the Pack in doubles play, as neither combination of Powell and Weber nor Paez and Weigel were able to record a victory. Powell and Weber dropped their first match to Joe Salisbury and David O'Leary of Memphis, 8-3, and came up short in their second match to Pedro Mol and Rafael Aita of UNC Wilmington, 9-8 (5). Paez and Weigel fell to Virginia's Ryan Shane and Uriguen, 8-4, before falling to Cedric De Zutter and Johnny Grimal of Memphis, 8-3, later in the day.
Doubles play will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m., with singles play set to get underway at 10:30 a.m. Powell and Weber will play in the consolation third place match against Alex Scheinman and Mitchell Palnet of UVA, while Paez and Weigel will take on Penn State's Russell Bader and Roman Trkulja, also in the consolation third place match of their bracket.
Powell and Weber will get singles action started for the Pack on Saturday, as Powell will face Memphis' Connor Glennon and Weber will square off against Alex Van Gils of George Washington. Both matches will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Paez and Weigel will begin their matches at noon on Saturday. Paez is matched up against Kosta Blank of UNCW, while Weigel is pitted against Sebastian Stiefelmeyer of Louisville.
