Paez Collects Two Wins on Day One of Regionals

CARY, N.C. - NC State men's tennis team collected six wins on day one of the USTA/ITA Carolina Regionals held at the Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park. Six of the eight players participating in the event for the Wolfpack recorded victories, including two by junior Rafael Paez.
Paez opened the day with a win against College of Charleston's Sebastian Lopez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. In his second match of the day, Paez downed Jordi Ferrer of UNC Charlotte, 6-4, 6-0. Senior Dave Thomson started the day by topping Campbell's Adrien Rossignon, 6-2, 6-2. Thomson fell in his second match to No. 94 Danny Kreyman of Wake Forest, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
In Sean Weber's initial match of the championships, the Pack junior faced Furman's Joel Cook, winning 6-1, 6-4. Weber was later edged by Zach Hublitz of UNC Wilmington, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Austin Powell, ranked No. 125 nationally and seeded ninth in the championships, received a first round bye. Powell defeated Grayson Mills of Presbyterian 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in his only match of the day.
Freshmen Simon Norenius and Thomas Weigel fell in their opening matches, but rebounded with victories in the consolation bracket. Trey Carter, also a freshman, received a tough draw and faced stiff competition in both of his matches on the day and was not able to record a victory. Ivan Sanchez Gomez trailed after the first set 7-6 (5) to Rafael Soriano of ECU, but was unable to continue in the second set and retired.
Singles play will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, while doubles play is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
