Men's Tennis Set to Compete at ITA All-American Championship
Sept. 27, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team will send three representatives to compete in the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships. The tournament will be played Sept. 28-Oct. 6 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center and Cascia Hall in Tulsa, Okla.
"This is a big event," said head coach Jon Choboy. "It sets the tone for the rest of the fall and the rest of the year. The breakthrough players typically come out in this tournament and we are excited about being there."
Junior Austin Powell and freshman Nick Horton will compete in the singles qualifying draw, which is set to be played Sept. 30-Oct. 2. A native of Sydney, Australia, Horton has enjoyed a strong start to his collegiate career, advancing to the semifinals of his draw in each of the first two tournaments this season.
"This will be a great opportunity for Nick to see the best players from around the country," Choboy said. "He has already seen the top players in our region and has done well. I've seen Nick steadily improve since he has been here and I think he is headed in the right direction.
In doubles, the pair of senior Sean Weber and Horton, the 49th-ranked duo in the ITA preseason listing, is slated to make its season debut in the qualifying round of doubles Sept. 30.
Pre-qualifying is set to begin Saturday, Sept. 28, with qualifying scheduled to start Monday, Sept. 30. A total of 16 players will advance from the qualifying draw to the main draw, which is slated to begin Friday, Oct. 4
