Oct. 16, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis team is set to begin play at the 2013 ITA Carolina Regionals, beginning Thursday morning at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The Wolfpack will have nine representatives in the singles field of 128 and four doubles teams in the field of 64.
“We’re excited about Regionals,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “It’ll be nice for most of our guys to be there together. It’s obviously a nice, prestigious event and we’re looking forward to playing in it.”
The tournament will feature players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina. The singles and doubles regional champions will advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
In singles, the Pack will have three seeded players, as juniors Austin Powell (10), Robbie Mudge (16) and freshman Nick Horton (17-24) all were granted seeds in the field of 128 players. Coming off an impressive performance at ITA All-Americans, Powell will face Rik van Gerwen of Campbell in the first-round of play, while Mudge is slated to face Ramon Simonetti of USC-Upstate. Rated as the No. 6 freshman/newcomer in the ITA preseason rankings, Horton will play Philipe Tsangarides of Coastal Carolina in Thursday’s first-round.
Freshman Parker McGuiness is set to make his collegiate debut Thursday against Clemson’s Brent Lett, while junior Beck Bond will open first-round action against Corey Decandia of Winthrop. Senior Sean Weber, sophomores Thomas Weigel and Simon Norenius, along with freshman Ryan Newman round out the lineup for the Wolfpack.
The doubles lineup for State is highlighted by the 10th-seeded duo of Mudge and Weber, who captured a doubles title in the Black Draw of the UVa Ranked + 1 earlier this fall and played in a doubles final at the Duke Fab Four Invitational. Mudge and Weber will open the tournament against Coastal Carolina’s Leo Christofides and Tsangarides.
The duo of Powell and Bond will face Conner Daly and Maik Ulrich of UNC, while McGuiness and Norenius will face the Tar Heel pair of Stuart Depaolo and Johan Skattum. The tandem of Horton and Weigel will round out the State doubles lineup.
The first and second rounds of doubles are scheduled to be played Thursday, beginning at 9 a.m. Doubles matches are slated to get underway Friday at 9 a.m.
