Academic Support Earns Prestigious Award for Internship Program

    June 12, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State's Academic Support Program For Student Athletes (ASPSA) has been awarded the prestigious National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) Model Practice Award for its internship program.

The N4A Model Practice Award is given annually to the university or college that displays best practices in its academic programming for student-athletes. This includes, but is not limited to academic advising, academic integrity, disability services, target populations, learning specialists, tutoring, study hall/table and life skills.

"ASPSA's internship program is a 'win-win' for all involved," said Carrie Leger, NC State Associate Athletic Director for Academics. "Each year, the interns provide meaningful support to NC State student-athletes while obtaining valuable work experience and learning from a team of talented professionals. The entire staff contributed to this accomplishment and we are very proud to receive this national recognition by the N4A."

The ASPSA Internship Program is an intensive yearlong internship designed to prepare aspiring new professionals in the field of academic support for student-athletes for full-time positions in the field. This is done through a variety of responsibilities and experiences, including learning and applying NCAA, ACC and NC State continuing eligibility rules for student-athletes as well as developing academic plans for individual students.

The ASPSA staff also facilitates professional development and growth opportunities for interns throughout the year. The ultimate goal for interns is to develop and/or increase proficiency in key skills necessary to obtain and excel in a full-time position in the area of academic support for student-athletes.

“There is so much talent in every person that I got the chance to work with at NC State," said Carrie Drake, a former ASPSA Intern at NC State. "If you want to go far in this business, this is the best place to be."

The internship follows an intentional timeline to allow interns the opportunity to not only be exposed to, but also gain significant experience in various areas, including registration advising, continuing eligibility review, event planning/special projects, teaching an orientation course, and monitoring academic progress throughout a semester.
