RALEIGH, N.C. – Ashley Spivey scored twice to lead No. 9 Maryland to a 3-0 victory over NC State on a chilly Sunday afternoon from Dail Soccer Field.
NC State (5-9, 0-5 ACC) rookie goal keeper Madison Shaw was in net for her first collegiate start and made the most of it by coming up with 17 saves – two shy of the school record.
Maryland (10-3-2, 5-1-1 ACC) scored just 4:39 into the match when Hayley Brock one-touched a ball from close range past Shaw for her ninth goal of the season. Cory Ryan set up the play with a pass to the middle of the goal that Brock tapped over the line.
Spivey made it 2-0 at 20:04 when she hauled in a long pass from Domenica Hodak and slipped her shot into the left portion of the net for her fourth of the season.
NC State had its two best looks in the 57th minute, both coming from midfielder Kaley Shlaes. The first was a bending shot into the upper-right corner that caromed off the cross bar.
23 seconds later Shlaes blasted a left-footed shot that Maryland keeper Rachelle Beanlands did not handle properly. The ball went loose in front of the goal, and Jennie Krauser pounced on it and had an open net, but was whistled for offsides to waive off the scoring chance for the Wolfpack.
Minutes later Spivey ran down the left side from the midfield and beat Shaw for a 3-0 lead.
Shaw’s 17 saves was just shy of the school record set by Lindsay Brecher in 1987 against North Carolina, and matched in 2002 by Gretchen Lear, also against the Tar Heels.
NC State hosts Duke on Thursday at 7 p.m., on ESPN3.
