    Feb. 27, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer coach Tim Santoro announced on Wednesday that five student-athletes have signed letters of intent to play for the Wolfpack beginning in the fall of 2013.

The five-person class is comprised of Alyson Brown (Midlothian, Va.), Rachel Cox (Greensboro, N.C.), Karly Gustafson (Fayetteville, N.C.), Gladys Loyas (Goshen, N.Y.) and Jackie Stengel (Melbourne, Fla.)

"Though transition years can be challenging from a recruiting standpoint, we were still able to put together a solid class," said Santoro. "In addition to the three players already committed (Karly, Alyson and Rachel), we added two very good players late in Jackie and Gladys.

"These five kids join a program that didn't graduate anyone from last season so we should have a very competitive environment for roles and positions."

Alyson Brown  •  Midlothian, Va.  •  James River HS

Alyson Brown, a 5-7 defender, played at James River High School for coach Ana Tsironis. A member of the varsity team since her freshman year, she was named first team all-district, all-region and second team all-state as a sophomore in 2011.

Brown also played for Richmond Kickers Elite from 2008-12 and has been a member of seven Virginia Club Champions League (VCCL) title teams. She has been an ODP Region 1 selection since 2010, and has taken international trips with her ODP club to Brazil in 2012 and will go to Russia next month.

Rachel Cox  •  Greensboro, N.C.  •  Grimsley HS

Rachel Cox is a 5-10 forward from Grimsley High School that has scored 73 goals and 56 assists in her prep career for coach Herk Degraw. She led her team to Metro Conference titles in 2010 and 2012, and was named all-state and All-South Region by the NSCAA each of the last two seasons.

She was also the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Year in the Metro Conference in 2012 and MVP of her region in 2011.

Cox has also been a prominent fixture on the Region 3 ODP club since 2008. She helped lead the 2011 team to a region title and an appearance in the national tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.

Karly Gustafson  •  Fayetteville, N.C  •  Sanford HS

Karly Gustafson is a 5-9 goal keeper from Terry Sanford High School. She was named all-region and all-conference each of the last three seasons, and team MVP in 2011 and 2012.

Gustafson has also been the starting keeper the last five years with 94 Fayetteville Force. The four-year captain helped her team to an undefeated 2012 spring by allowing just one goal in seven matches.  She also competed at ODP Nationals in 2011 in Phoenix.

    Gladys Loyas •  Goshen, N.Y.  •  S. S. Seward

Gladys Loyas, who stands 5-9, has played all over the field in her prep career from defender to striker and a little bit of midfield. She becomes the first girl soccer player from S.S. Seward Institute to sign with a Division I school.

Loyas wrapped up her five-year high school career this past fall with career totals of 145 goals and 66 assists. Forty-six came in 2012 playing forward in 20 games, after scoring 39 goals as a junior in 2011 in the midfield.

An all-state selection four times, including first team her final three years, Loyas was an eighth grader when S.S. Steward won a state title. She was later a member of three Section IX championships, and a regional title squad in 2010.

Loyas played for New York East ODP from 2009-11, starting every state team game for three years. She was also on the ODP Region 1 team that played in Brazil in 2012.

Jackie Stengel  •  Melbourne, Fla.  •  Viera HS

Jackie Stengel is a 5-7 forward from Viera High School. In three seasons, she compiled 112 goals and 47 assists for head coach Courtney Lundy.

Top Drawer Soccer named her the second-highest rated player in the state of Florida, and 33rd nationally at the forward position.

Stengel, the Florida Class 4A Player of the Year in 2013, played nine years with Space Coast United, and spent four years with the Region 3 ODP team.

She once scored eight goals in a high school match, and had six goals in three separate contests.
