April 22, 2014
RALEIGH – Karly Gustafson of the NC State women’s soccer team has been chosen to train with the Puerto Rican Women’s National Team, the Federacion Puertorriqueña de Futbol (Puerto Rican Football Federation) announced recently.
Gustafson, a sophomore goalkeeper for the Wolfpack, will join the team in Puerto Rico beginning May 12. She and selected others will compete to make the 20-woman roster for participation in the 2014 Women’s Caribbean Cup and possible participation in 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, from which three nations will ultimately emerge from the region to earn automatic qualification to the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada.
The Puerto Rican Women’s National Team will play Barbados, Dominica, and Martinique between May 21-28 in Puerto Rico in the first stage of the Women’s Caribbean Cup. Should the team succeed, it would move on to the final round of matches in Trinidad and Tobago from Aug. 17-27.
Gustafson appeared in four matches for the Wolfpack during the 2013 season, all of which were starts. She posted a 2-2 record on the year, making 22 saves and allowing 10 goals. The Fayetteville, N.C., native made a career-high 10 saves at Maryland on Oct. 3.
The NC State women’s soccer team will play its lone exhibition match of the 2014 season in Raleigh on Aug. 13 against Appalachian State. The Wolfpack will officially open the campaign at home against UNC-Wilmington on Aug. 22.
