Softball Completes Doubleheader Sweep Against UNCW with 9-1 Win
April 16, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team improved its home record to 21-1 on the season with a 9-1 win against UNCW in the second game a doubleheader sweep Wednesday evening at Dail Stadium. State won the first game, 5-0.
“I was really pleased with our pitching today,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “We gave up one earned run and only allowed one walk in two games which allows our offense to do what it needs to do in order to get the win. I’m very happy with our pitching.”
The Wolfpack (28-11) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Renada Davis walked to start the frame and moved over to third base on a single by freshman Hannah Yeager. Yeager stole second base and Davis scored on the throw to second base attempting to get Yeager.
After freshman Molly Hutchison walked and junior Sara Lippard was hit-by-pitch, the bases were loaded for Chelsea Tate. The senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., fought off a couple 3-2 pitches before earning an RBI walk to plate Hutchison from third base making the score 2-0.
State added two runs in the bottom of the fourth following a two-run homer by Davis. It was her second of the day and 12th of the season. Sophomore Lana Van Dyken singled earlier in the frame and scored on the home run. Tyler Ross, a freshman from Cameron, N.C., put the Wolfpack ahead 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer of her own. Leah Jones singled prior to Ross’ at-bat to score on the play.
“I felt really good during warm-ups and I was seeing the ball really well which allowed me to hit two home runs,” said Davis. “I was trying to keep my weight back and make good adjustments at the plate. We hit the ball well in both games today as a team and we drove the ball around which is what we needed heading into the weekend.”
Three more runs in the bottom of the sixth ended the game by the eight-run mercy rule. Sophomore Hanna Sommer smacked a pinch-hit two RBI double down the left field line and Jones ripped a single back up the middle to plate Sommer from third to end the game. Freshman Morgan Medford also had a pinch-hit single in the inning for the Wolfpack.
UNCW (17-24) scored its lone run of the contest in the top of the fourth, following a single by Brittany Gamby and an RBI double from Merritt Wilkinson.
Freshman Courtney Mirabella (5-2) started in the circle for State and threw her third complete game of the season. She struck out seven batters, allowed just three hits and one earned run.
NC State will return to action this weekend when it hosts the Boston College Eagles in a three-game set. Friday’s doubleheader is set for 4 p.m., while Saturday’s series finale is slated for noon and will serve as senior day.
