    RALEIGH, N.C. -- NC State's 2013 softball season begins next Friday at the Florida International Panther Invitational in Miami, with a new excitement as the fast-pitch program enters its 10th season, now under the guidance of first-year head coach Shawn Rychcik.

    The squad returns three seniors - Caitlin DentKatie Mansilla and Bethaney Wells - as well as 2012 ACC Rookie of the Year Renada Davis, a shortstop who set a school record last season with a .362 batting average and a .450 on-base percentage.

    On this year's roster of 14 players are five juniors: Scout AlbertsonKirsty GrantLeah JonesHayley Stowe and Chelsea Tate.

    Tate is a versatile player who made 32 starts last season, 14 at first base, 11 at catcher, four at third base, two in the outfield and one at shortstop. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native posted a .243 batting average in her 40 overall games.



    A communication-public relations major with a minor in journalism, Tate hopes one day to work in public relations for a professional sports franchise.
