March 10, 2014
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State softball team will return to the field at Dail Stadium on Tuesday for a mid-week doubleheader against the Radford Highlanders. The first game is set for 2 p.m. with the second game to follow.
NC State and Radford have met on the softball diamond five times in the programs' history with the Wolfpack owning a 3-2 advantage in the series. The teams split a doubleheader in the last meeting on April 8, 2008 in Radford, Va.
The Wolfpack (13-6, 6-0 ACC) is currently on a 12-game winning streak, dating back to a 4-3 win against Lehigh on Feb. 21 to start the streak. During that span, the Pack has outscored opponents 68-12 and outhit opponents 98-42.
Senior Leah Jones led State at the plate in last week's games, recording a .500 batting average with six hits in 12 plate appearances. Renada Davis and Chelsea Tate also had strong performances over the last five games with seven and five hits, respectively.
NC State has received some excellent pitching in the last few games, as freshman Courtney Mirabella's return from injury has formed a great one-two combo with junior Emily Weiman. In the last five games, the duo has combined to strike out 37 batters in 33.0 innings pitched, while only allowing two earned runs.
Jessie Hutchens leads the squad at the plate with a .357 batting average, including a team-high 15 hits and three home runs. Nia Chiles is second on the team in hits with 11 and a .324 batting average.
On the mound, Rachael Walters headlines the pitching staff with a 2.08 earned run average (ERA) and a record of 4-3. She has pitched 40.1 innings this season and has given up 12 earned runs.
