Softball's Davis, Weiman Earn ACC Weekly Honors
April 30, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. – For the third time this season, NC State softball has swept ACC Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, the league announced on Tuesday.
Sophomore shortstop Renada Davis and sophomore pitcher Emily Weiman were recognized by the conference for their outstanding play last week in leading the Wolfpack to a win over Elon and a three-game sweep of Boston College.
The Wolfpack (30-18-1 overall, 13-7 ACC) put on an amazing offensive display during the week, with a total of 21 homers in the four games, including 15 in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep at BC.
Davis, the national co-leader with 24 home runs on the season, led the offensive charge with four homers in four games, including a pair in Saturday’s second game. That’s the fourth time this season the sophomore from Tomball, Texas, has hit multiple homers in a game.
She also hit her first career grand slam in Sunday’s regular-season finale, one of three bases-loaded homers the Pack hit this weekend and one of a school-record seven the team has on the season.
Davis also extended her hitting streak to nine in a row, matching the team’s current win total. During her streak, Davis is 18-for-35 (.514) with seven home runs and 16 RBIs.
Her school-record total of 24 home runs is tied for the second most in ACC history, five behind former Georgia Tech slugger Jen Yee’s total of 29 in 2010.
Weiman, the pitcher of record in all four the Pack’s wins last week, broke the school record by winning Sunday’s finale for her 28th victory of the season, breaking the mark set by former ACC Pitcher of the Year Abbie Sims.
Weiman has picked up the win in each of her final nine starts of the regular-season, which ended for the Wolfpack with this weekend’s sweep of the Eagles. In all, the Pack won 16 of its final 18 games.
In her four starts last week, the righthander from Pasadena, Md., struck out 26 batters, including a season-high 12 in the series opener against Boston College.
This is her ACC-leading fifth Pitcher of the Week honor of the season.
Weiman was also chose earlier this year with teammates Kirsty Grant following the team’s sweep of then No. 19 Virginia Tech and Caitlin Dent following the team’s series win over then No. 24 North Carolina.
State is off this weekend, while several other ACC teams complete their regular-season schedules. The Pack, currently in second place in the league standings, will be back in action at the ACC Tournament from May 9-11 in Tallahassee, Fla.
