Softball to Open NCAA Regional Play Against UAB on Friday

ATHENS, Ga. - The NC State softball team will begin play in the 2014 Athens Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 16 when it competes against the UAB Blazers. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. from Jack Turner Stadium on the University of Georgia's campus.
The Wolfpack (34-16) enters the weekend having won six of its last eight games. State is making its fourth NCAA appearance in program history and its second consecutive trip to an NCAA Regional. Joining the Pack at the regional are host Georgia (45-12), along with UAB (31-25) and Chattanooga (34-19).
NC State and UAB have only met one time in the history of the programs, which resulted in a 3-1 win for the Blazers on March 17, 2012 in Lexington, Ky.
For the season, the Wolfpack is 18-3 when scoring in the first inning and 25-5 when the squad plates the first run of a game. The Pack pitching staff has been excellent at preserving the lead, boasting a 30-1 mark when leading after the fourth inning.
Junior Renada Davis leads State at the plate with a batting average of .374 and a team-leading 58 hits. She also has 17 home runs on the year and only needs one more round-tripper to tie Jen Chamberlin for the program record with 49. Sophomore Lana Van Dyken is second on the team in hitting with 48 hits and a .358 clip.
Emily Weiman, hailing from Pasadena, Md., paces the pitching staff with a 28-13 record on the year in 248.2 innings pitched. The junior pitcher is tied for eighth in the nation and leads the ACC with 11 complete game shutouts. Freshman Courtney Mirabella has also been solid for the Pack with a 6-3 and a 3.85 earned run average (ERA) in 72.2 innings pitched.
NC State and UAB have several common opponents on the year. The Blazers lost to Syracuse (3-2), Georgia (10-1), East Carolina twice (2-1, 7-1) and won two of three games against Charlotte (8-0, 8-0, 0-1). The Wolfpack defeated Syracuse twice (8-6, 7-0), lost to Georgia (8-0), beat ECU twice (7-2, 5-4) and swept a doubleheader at Charlotte (3-2, 8-3).
Caitlin Attfield leads the Blazers offensively with a .422 batting average to go along with 84 hits on the season. Kristen McGrath is second on the squad in hitting with a .333 clip and 57 hits, including 13 home runs. Megan McGrath paces the lineup with 14 homers on the year.
In the circle, Leigh Streetman and Lannah Campbell have shared the pitching duties. Streetman has started 30 games with a 2.05 ERA, while Campbell has an ERA of 2.82 in 26 starts. Streetman is 19-15 and Campbell is 12-9 on the season.
