March 30, 2013
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The NC State women’s tennis team suffered a 4-0 defeat at Florida State Saturday afternoon in ACC action at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
Florida State (11-4, 3-1 ACC) went on to clinch the doubles point on court two, after Kerrie Cartwright and Daneika Borthwick toughed out a 9-7 win over sophomore Elisha Hande and freshman Rachael James-Baker at the No. 2 spot.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, the Seminoles did now allow NC State (10-5, 1-4 ACC) to gain any momentum. Cartwright defeated Hande, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot, before Sargeant outlasted James-Baker, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot to push the FSU lead to 3-0 in the overall match.
With its back against the wall, the Pack could not hold off the Seminoles, as Vriens downed sophomore Nicole Martinez, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 3 spot to clinch the match and send Florida State to a 4-0 victory.
The Wolfpack will return to the courts when it travels to Blacksburg, Va., next Friday, April 5 to face Virginia Tech at 2 p.m.
