Wolfpack Women's Tennis Falls in ACC Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – The NC State women’s tennis team was defeated, 4-0, by North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the 2013 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.
The Tar Heels (25-2, 10-1 ACC) came out swinging at the start of doubles play with an 8-2 victory in the No. 2 spot, as Zoe De Bruycker and Ashley Dai defeated the Wolfpack’s sophomore duo of Nicole Martinez and Elisha Hande. UNC clinched the doubles point shortly after when Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Tessa Lyons outlasted senior Chloe Smith and sophomore Sophie Nelson, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot, and took a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
NC State (14-9, 4-7 ACC) could not flip the momentum in its favor at the beginning of singles play, as UNC collected a victory in the No. 4 spot when the 56th-ranked Caroline Price defeated freshman Rachael James-Baker, 6-2, 6-1 to give the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead.
North Carolina pushed the Wolfpack to the brink when Lauren McHale downed Hande, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot, before 36th-ranked Whitney Kay clinched the match with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Smith in the No. 3 spot.
The Wolfpack will await word from the NCAA Selection Committee on an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Championship. The selection show will be aired live on Tuesday, April 30 at 5:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
