Kissell Defeated in Consolation Semis at Riviera/ITA
Oct. 7, 2012
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – NC State junior and 19th-ranked Joelle Kissell’s run through the main draw’s consolation bracket at the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships came to an end on Saturday, as she fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to Alabama’s 10th-ranked Mary Anne Macfarlane.
Kissell fell in the first round of the main draw on Thursday, but carried a little momentum into the consolation bracket after advancing via walkover in the back draw’s first round, before upending Texas A&M’s 17th-ranked Cristina Stancu in three sets in Friday’s consolation quarterfinal. Unfortunately, Macfarlane denied Kissell’s attempt to earn a spot in the consolation championship on Saturday evening, and ended her journey in the prestigious tournament.
The Hostetter, Pa., native will return to Raleigh, N.C., and prepare for her next competition this fall, which will likely be at ITA Regionals, Oct. 18-20, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
