Hande Ousted at ITA Carolina Regional

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – NC State sophomore Elisha Hande, the final Wolfpack women’s tennis player remaining in the singles draw at the 2012 ITA Carolina Regional Championships, was defeated Saturday afternoon, snapping her streak of seven straight wins in matches this fall.
Hande, who came into Saturday’s second round match with an 8-2 singles record this season, took on Duke sophomore Annie Mulholland, with the winner earning the right to play again later in the day with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line.
The Cheltenham, England native lost a hard-fought first set, 6-4, but showed outstanding resiliency by countering to force a decisive third set after winning the second set, 6-3. Mulholland wouldn’t let Hande’s momentum continue however, as Mulholland went on to take the final set, 6-4, and eliminate Hande from the tournament.
In consolation bracket action, freshman Rachael James-Baker had a great day, picking up two victories. The Plantation, Fla., product breezed through Wake Forest’s Karen Forman, 6-1, 6-4, in her first match, before meeting Winthrop’s Caitlin Cridland. James-Baker won the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second set, 6-1. The third set was decided in a super tiebreaker, where the freshman responded with a convincing, 10-3, triumph to seal the victory.
Sophomore Sophie Nelson also notched a back draw victory on the day, downing Winthrop’s Giovanna Portioli, 6-2, 6-2, in her only consolation match of the day.
Sophomore Nicole Martinez squared off with South Carolina’s Ximena Siles, and raced out to an early lead with a 6-2 first set victory. Siles would respond however, and clinched the match by winning the final two sets, 6-3, 6-0. Senior Chloe Smith had an identical outcome in her consolation match against Winthrop’s Alice Garcia. Smith won the first set, 6-2, but dropped the final two sets, 6-3 and 6-0.
Junior Christy Sipes faced off with Campbell’s Ana Maria Ortiz, and after dropping the first set, 6-0, rallied back to win the second set, 6-4. Ortiz would prevail in the deciding set however, fighting to a 6-4 win. Freshman Taylor Zaytoun battled Elon’s Jordan Johnston in her only match of the day, but fell, 6-1, 6-1.
The Pack will return to Raleigh, before traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., Oct. 26-28 for the University of Tennessee Invitational.
