Nov. 19, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State sophomore outside hitter Dariyan Hopper and Miami senior setter Nrithya Sundararaman have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, announced by the conference on Monday.
North Carolina freshman middle blocker Paige Neuenfeldt has been named the Freshman of the Week.
Hopper led NC State’s offensive attack in a pair of conference home wins over the weekend, guaranteeing the Wolfpack its first winning record in conference play since 1988. Hopper had 10 kills and hit .400 in a 3-0 sweep of Virginia on Friday night and then posted a career-high 23 kills in a come-from-behind win over Virginia Tech on Saturday.
After the Hokies won the first two sets, Hopper led the way as the Wolfpack won the final three and the match. For the week, the Shorewood, Ill., native hit .382 on 68 attempts and had 4.13 kills per set.
The Wolfpack (22-8 overall, 12-7 ACC) concludes its record-setting regular-season schedule on Wednesday, when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face North Carolina at Carmichael Arena in a 2 p.m. contest. The Pack has set a school record for ACC wins for the second season in a row, guaranteed its second 20-win season in a row and assured itself of its best finish in the league in 25 years.
Hopper is the fourth NC State player to win a weekly award from the conference this season. Senior setter Megan Cyr and sophomore middle blocker have both earned ACC Player of the Week honors this season and freshman Morgan Cormier was named Freshman of the Week.
Sundararaman continued her strong season with 11.50 assists per set (69 overall) in two sweeps over the weekend.
Neuenfeldt, named the Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season, hit .476 with 25 kills and 42 attempts and added five blocks as North Carolina swept Virginia Tech and Virginia.
