BOSTON – Erika Kemp broke NC State's indoor school record in the 5,000m, crossing the finish line in 15:45.46 at the BU Season opener.
Her time broke current women's cross country head coach Laurie Henes' 24-year record by almost 10 seconds and tops the nation in women's 5,000m times.
Kemp, a Mount Holly, N.J., native, shattered her old 5,000m indoor personal best by almost 31 seconds.
The time should warrant an NCAA Indoor qualifying mark, as only four runners beat Kemp's time during the 2014-15 season. At the end of the regular season, the top 16 in each event will advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The junior recently capped off a successful 2015 cross country campaign, where she helped lead the team to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Kemp was the Pack's top runner at nationals and she earned NCAA Southeast Regional honors as well as All-ACC honors during the season.
She had a breakout track season last year, earning a spot in the finals of the 5,000m race at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She also earned two All-ACC mentions in the event with a silver medal at the ACC Outdoors Championships and a bronze medal at the ACC Indoor Championships.
Rachel Koon officially debuted on the track in the 5,000m race. The redshirt freshman posted a strong opening mark with a time of 16:35.02 – good for 12th place.
Koon is coming off a breakout cross country season, where she was the team's top runner at regionals and second runner at the NCAA Championships and ACC Championships.
On the men's side, Bakri Abushouk finished seventh in the 5,000m race with a new personal best of 14:18.75. Abushouk's mark is good for an ACC qualifying mark and currently ranks seventh in the country.
