NC State finishes regular-season schedule at Boston College Sunday
RALEIGH – No. 38 women's tennis closed the home schedule strong Friday afternoon as it defeated No. 27 Wake Forest 5-2. Friday's victory serves as the Pack's thirteenth of the season and fifth over a conference opponent.
Â
Prior to the match, the team recognized its two seniors Joanna Nalborska and Taylor Zaytoun who took the home court for the final time in their collegiate careers on Friday.
Â
Â
With the emotion of the day set aside, the Wolfpack started the match with a high level of competition. The heavy focus on doubles improvement throughout the season was on display early in the Pack's performance against Wake as NC State captured the doubles decision in the first two finishes for the first time in ACC play this season. Martina Frantova and Tayla Stenta downed their first ranked duo in a 6-3 victory over No. 53 Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko. Bianca Moldovan and Nalborska followed close behind with a 6-4 win over Emma Davis and Samantha Asch to put the first Pack point on the board.
Â
The No. 38 Wolfpack's tenacity continued success into singles play against the No.27-ranked squad. Moldovan started and finished hot, quickly downing Ulyashchenko 6-1, 6-2. Making her first at-home appearance in the singles line up, Barbara Mancera tallied the team's second straight-set win of the day in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Luisa Fernandez.
Â
Just one point away from clinching the dual the decision came down to finishes at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. In her tenth win over a nationally-ranked opponent it was No. 51 Frantova's 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over No. 69 Guerin that sealed the Pack's winning fate.
Â
Vying for a win in the final home match of her collegiate career, Nalborska rallied to down Emma Davis 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 and improve the No. 38 Wolfpack 5-2 over the No. 27 Demon Deacons.
